Bell Cove Historic Caboose Museum

Bell Cove Historic Caboose Museum
Newbury, NH
In the fall of 1999, the Town of Newbury officially opened a B&M caboose as a visitor center at Bell Cove, Newbury Harbor. The site is part of the original railroad line which ran from Concord to Claremont from the 1870s through the 1950s. Extension of the line beyond Bradford, NH to Newbury and points west was made possible in 1871 with the opening of the Newbury Cut. A revolutionary new steam drill and dynamite were used to blast through the Cut's towering rock ledges. Extension of the Concord-Claremont line brought an outpouring of goods and visitors to the Lake Sunapee region, with stops in Newbury Harbor and along the lake. As part of the refurbishing of the car, an extensive collection of donated and purchased railroad memorabilia has been put in place. These include signal lights and lanterns, bells and whistles, brochures and timetables, clock, desk, and stove. Many more articles are being curated and will be added to the collection. The Caboose Museum is open to the public from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and we welcome all visitors to this historic structure in its picturesque setting on the shore of Lake Sunapee. Additional area information is available at the adjacent Information Booth, and picnic tables and park benches are provided so visitors can linger and enjoy lunch or a snack at this scenic site.
